Sinus and Allergy Tips

Sinus and Facial Pressure

Pressure in the facial and forehead areas is often caused by sinus infections or sinus obstruction. Other problems can also lead to the sensation of pressure and pain in the facial area. Headache disorders, such as migraines, frequently produce symptoms in the facial area. Other medical conditions, such as hypertension, can also lead to headaches, including facial pressure and pain. A thorough history by a professional who understands the various causes of facial pain and pressure can often pinpoint the actual cause of the symptoms. Sometimes imaging studies, such as CT scans of the sinuses, are necessary to help determine the underlying cause.   If you suspect facial pressure and pain may be coming from sinus problems, it is important to be thoroughly evaluated by an Ear Nose and Throat physician who has a full understanding of the many causes of the symptoms. This can avoid improper treatments and procedures for sinus conditions, when the underlying symptoms may not actually be caused by sinus problems.
Inflamed sinuses, such as from sinus infections, can stimulate nerves in the facial area to produce the symptoms of facial pain and pressure. Obstruction of the natural sinus openings, can lead to a pressure difference between the inside of the sinuses and the outside environment (known as barosinusitis), which can produce symptoms without actual inflammation of the sinuses. Narrow sinus openings can also lead to recurring sinus infections.
The good news is, once an appropriate diagnosis is made, proper treatment can usually bring great improvement or resolution to the facial pressure and pain. If it is determined that sinus problems may be the underlying cause, proper medications can often relieve the symptoms without the need for surgery or procedures. If medications are not successful in resolving the facial pain and pressure caused by sinus problems, multiple procedures are available that have a high rate of success in improving sinus problems. These include functional endoscopic sinus surgery, and balloon sinus dilation, commonly referred to as Sinuplast.
If you are suffering from chronic facial pressure or pain, we invite you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Leatherman for evaluation. He is a nationally recognized clinician, researcher, and educator in the field of allergy and sinus disorders. Together, we can formulate a plan to help you finally obtain relief from these symptoms!
